Earlier this week, the Army named 28-year-old Durham, North Carolina, Capt. Rebecca Lobach as the last victim of the Black Hawk helicopter collision over Washington, D.C. All 67 occupants of American Eagle Flight 5342 perished in the disaster as well.
The family of Lobach expressed grief at their terrible loss. "We are heartbroken by the loss of our dear Rebecca," they said. "She was a brilliant star in all our life—kind, kind, smart, humorous, aspirational, and tough. Nobody dreamed greater or put more effort toward reaching her objectives.
Skilled and committed pilot Lobach commissioned into the Army under the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a notable military graduate.
Friends and other troops said she inspired everyone around her. First Lt. Samantha Brown, who ran across Lobach on their first day of ROTC, remembered her compassion and will. "She was among the most motivated persons I have ever encountered," Brown stated. She pushed us to be better and raised everyone.
Brown had texted Lobach the day the incident occurred, talking about a trip they had booked together.
Military and aviation authorities are still looking at the terrible collision while trying to ascertain the cause.
