Request service records, ID cards, benefit letters, discharge upgrades.

Records & Document Services offered by the VA enable veterans to access important personal military records, official documents, and identification that are essential for obtaining benefits and verifying service. The VA provides a streamlined process for requesting and managing these records.

Veterans can request copies of their DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) and other service records through the National Archives' eVetRecs system or by submitting Standard Form SF-180. These records are often required when applying for VA benefits, employment, or membership in veterans organizations.

The VA's online portal allows veterans to download benefit letters and decision reviews, which provide official documentation of their disability ratings, monthly benefits, and other entitlements. These letters can be used for verifying income, applying for loans, or accessing other services.

Veterans can apply for a Veteran ID Card (VIC) through the VA, which provides proof of military service and can be used to access discounts and services offered to veterans by businesses and organizations. The VIC is not a replacement for the Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) used for VA health care services.

For veterans who believe their discharge status was unjust or incorrect, the VA provides guidance on applying for a discharge upgrade through the appropriate military branch's review board. An upgraded discharge can make veterans eligible for VA benefits and services previously denied due to their discharge characterization.

Additionally, veterans can access their medical records through the My HealtheVet portal, which allows them to view and download personal health information, manage appointments, and communicate with their health care providers.

By utilizing Records & Document Services, veterans ensure they have access to vital information and documentation needed to fully benefit from the services and opportunities available to them.
