As the Ukrainian battlefield continues to be shaped by drones, both sides have looked for creative ways to combat these unmanned aerial threats. In a recently disclosed sabotage operation, Ukrainian forces planted explosives within the first-person view (FPV) goggles used to pilot Russian drones, targeting not just the drones but also the operators.

This strategy, which was initially reported by Russian state media and then verified by Ukrainian officials to The New York Times, entailed attaching 10–15 grams of explosive material to FPV goggles, which would explode when activated. The altered goggles were purportedly smuggled into Russia as contributions to humanitarian causes.

According to Ukrainian authorities, even though Russia has not verified any casualties, the sheer sight of such equipment may make Russian drone operators hesitant and afraid, which could interfere with drone-based attacks.

According to reports, this operation was inspired by Israel's 2023 pager bomb strikes in Lebanon, in which Israeli intelligence detonated explosives inside Hezbollah fighters' communication devices. Dozens of people died as a result of the terrible tactic.

Since the Allied troops targeted German infrastructure before the D-Day assault in World War II, sabotage has been a crucial combat tactic. Targets in contemporary battles have changed over time, moving from railroads and industry to electronic warfare equipment.

As the third year of the conflict in Ukraine approaches, both sides are still adapting and employing novel and unusual tactics to undermine the enemy's war effort.
