Petty Officer First Class Gabriel Journey, a submariner with the USS Albany, received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal — the highest non-combat honor for heroism — for his courageous actions in saving lives during an apartment fire in Norfolk, Virginia.

On November 12, 2024, Journey was off duty, driving to pick up his spouse, when he noticed smoke billowing from a nearby apartment complex. He immediately pulled over and jumped into action. Upon discovering that individuals remained inside, he signaled a police officer and collaborated with bystanders to assist in evacuating the residents. Cynthia Booker and her son found themselves trapped on an upper floor, paralyzed by fear and unable to leap to safety.

Journey ascended onto a perilously narrow four-inch ledge to reach them. He carefully assisted Booker out the window with a steady demeanor, ensuring her safe descent to those waiting below. He subsequently did the same for her son. The video of the dramatic rescue captures flames and smoke enveloping the building amidst the courageous effort to save those inside.

Journey then utilized a ladder to access another unit, assisting two more individuals fleeing the fire. His actions played a crucial role in averting additional injury or loss of life. The fire injured two individuals and displaced 32 others.

Adm. Daryl Caudle presented the award during the 125th Submarine Birthday Ball, a part of the Navy’s 250th anniversary celebration. Vice Adm. Rob Gaucher commended Journey for his swift decision-making and courage, stating, “He acted boldly to take charge and put his own life on the line.”

Journey was honored with a Lifesaving Award from the City of Norfolk in December. His bravery is a compelling testament to the spirit of selfless service — in every moment, whether on duty or off.
