On June 6, veterans and their supporters will convene in Washington, D.C., as well as at state capitals across the country, to protest substantial job reductions and restructuring within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The event, titled "Unite for Veterans, Unite for America," takes place on the anniversary of D-Day and aims to highlight the disproportionate impact of federal downsizing on the veteran community.

Almost 30% of the federal workforce consists of veterans, indicating that workforce reductions at the VA and other agency cuts during the Trump administration could significantly affect veterans in their roles as employees and as recipients of services.

"This is not about party politics," stated Will Attig, executive director of the Union Veterans Council at the AFL-CIO. "This concerns safeguarding those who have served and making certain that the government fulfills its commitments to them."

VA Secretary Doug Collins has announced that the agency intends to eliminate approximately 80,000 positions by the end of the year in an effort to streamline operations and enhance efficiency. Collins asserts that vital medical and disability services will remain intact; however, detractors contend that the reductions are already negatively impacting staff morale and veterans' access to care. Earlier this year, 2,400 employees, primarily probationary workers, were dismissed.

Elon Musk, a close advisor to Trump on federal operations, has spearheaded significant agency-wide cuts that have resulted in confusion and legal challenges throughout government departments.

Although Collins asserts that funds are being shifted to veterans’ outreach and community care, advocacy groups caution that the loss of seasoned VA employees and the cancellation of training programs will weaken the department’s fundamental abilities, including its medical research and training pipelines.

"This rally represents veterans taking a stand to declare that enough is enough," stated Chris Purdy of the Chamberlain Network. “Our goal is to serve, to work diligently, and to ensure that our fellow brothers and sisters in uniform receive the care they rightfully deserve.”

The event in D.C. on June 6 is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will include speeches, veteran-led organizing, and possibly appearances by notable musicians and celebrities, as stated by Attig. Further rallies are being organized at state capitols across the nation. Organizations that wish to participate can join the coalition via the group's website.

“This is not about opposing an individual—it’s about upholding a commitment,” stated Attig. "This is an appeal driven by a sense of national pride."
