The United States and the Philippines are launching their most extensive joint military exercises to date, demonstrating steadfast military collaboration and indicating that the Trump administration is maintaining its presence in the disputed South China Sea.

The annual Balikatan exercises, meaning "shoulder-to-shoulder" in Tagalog, are scheduled from April 21 to May 9 and will include approximately 14,000 troops, comprising 9,000 Americans and 5,000 Filipinos.

The drills, conducted in multiple locations throughout the Philippines, will feature live-fire exercises, missile system deployments, and simulated battle scenarios aimed at improving coordination and combat readiness. U.S. Marine Col. Doug Krugman stated that the majority of the exercises will take place on Philippine territory, with several multi-nation naval operations scheduled to occur at sea. Australia is deploying 200 troops, while Japan and other regional partners will provide military observers.

The exercises occur during a critical period in the region, with China persisting in military activities close to Taiwan and escalating disputes in the South China Sea. Philippine Brig. Gen. Michael Logico has made it clear that the drills are not directed at any particular nation. However, the presence of a U.S. mid-range missile system, unmanned sea vessels, and special operations near Batanes—located just across from Taiwan—underscores the strategic significance of the exercises.

Trump’s “America First” policy had raised concerns among Asian allies, yet Logico emphasized: “As you can see, there is no scale back.” We are discussing a comprehensive battle test.

According to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who visited Manila last month, the presence of the U.S. Navy Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System and other advanced systems signifies a commitment to regional deterrence rather than escalation. He emphasized the significance of upholding peace “through strength.”

China's ongoing insistence on the withdrawal of U.S. missile systems from the Philippines has prompted officials to emphasize the importance of their placement in strategic locations—especially close to contested shoals—for the protection of sovereignty and the preservation of freedom of navigation in one of the globe's most essential trade corridors.
