Eight decades after U.S. soldiers faced enemy fire to cross the Rhine River and penetrate German defenses, contemporary troops assembled on its banks to honor the significant crossing that took place on March 22, 1945.

The occasion showcased an Army band, soldiers adorned in vintage WWII uniforms, and “Tugboat Annie,” a meticulously restored amphibious boat from the 1940s that gracefully navigated the Rhine in homage. Helen Patton, the granddaughter of Gen. George S. Patton, was present at the ceremony, which celebrated the audacious river assault of the Third Army.

In the year 1945, the Allies encountered their last significant barrier—the Rhine River—before advancing into Nazi Germany. As British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery meticulously orchestrated a grand nighttime offensive, Patton’s forces executed an unexpected crossing on March 22 at Oppenheim. In a daring move, U.S. forces quietly maneuvered across the terrain in amphibious vehicles, surprising the German defenders who were unprepared for such an unexpected approach. In a matter of days, multiple divisions of the Third Army had pierced through enemy defenses, propelling the Allied forces forward with remarkable speed.

Amid the unfolding events, Montgomery’s Operation Plunder unfolded with a grand, synchronized assault on March 23. This operation featured airborne drops, intense artillery bombardments, and daring amphibious landings across a 20-mile stretch. The significance of both operations lay in their pivotal role in paving the way to Berlin and ultimately leading to the downfall of Nazi Germany.

Today, U.S. and German soldiers united, honoring the sacrifices made in their shared quest for freedom. The commemoration stood as a poignant reminder of the lasting bond forged between once-adversarial nations, a testament to the bravery of those who fought, ensuring their heroism remains in memory.
