An Air Force release says that one airman was killed and another was hurt in a shootout at Kirtland Air Force Base early Saturday morning.
The 377th Security Forces Squadron was called to the scene of the crime around 2 a.m. near the base's Truman Gate. Few details are available at this time, but officials have stated that there was an off-base chase that turned violent.
At the scene, one airman was declared dead, and another was taken to the University of New Mexico Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the hand. The airman was hurt, but his injuries were not life-threatening, and he was freed.
The Air Force has not yet said who was involved or made it clear whether the airman who died was a suspect or an officer reacting to the call.
The case is being investigated by the FBI, the Albuquerque Police Department, and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. At the time of this writing, the Truman Gate was still closed while officials tried to determine what happened before the fatal exchange.
The 58th Special Operations Wing and the 377th Air Base Wing are based at Kirtland AFB, which is in the Albuquerque city area.
