Doug Collins, a former Georgia congressman, has been appointed as the next Secretary of Veterans Affairs by President-elect Donald Trump. This appointment adds a seasoned military veteran to his Cabinet. From 2013 to 2021, Collins, who is 58 years old, was a member of the House Rules Committee and vice chairman of the House Republican Conference in the U.S. House of Representatives. The veteran community was taken aback by his appointment, as his name had not been extensively discussed for the position.
Collins' military experience is noteworthy. He initially served as a Navy chaplain on active duty for two years before re-enlisting in the Air Force Reserve in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist assaults. In 2008, he deployed to Iraq as a member of the 94th Airlift Wing while serving in the Air Force Reserve. He remains steadfast in his dedication to the armed forces, as evidenced by his continued participation in the reserve.
The elected president pointed out, "We must prioritize the welfare of our brave men and women in uniform. Doug will serve as an exceptional advocate for our active-duty servicemembers, veterans, and military families to guarantee that they receive the necessary support."
In announcing the appointment, Trump underscored Collins' commitment to assisting military members and their families.
