Army Maj. Erica Vandal has proudly served her country for nearly 14 years. A graduate of West Point and part of a multi-generational military family, her commitment to service runs deep—her father served four decades in the Army, and her brothers have flown for the Marine Corps and Navy.

Now, Vandal’s future in the military is uncertain.

As a transgender officer, she is among the thousands of service members whose status is threatened by a sweeping executive order issued by President Donald Trump just days after taking office. Signed on January 27, the directive initiated the immediate dismissal of all transgender personnel. A Pentagon memo released February 26 cemented the new policy.

According to the memo, individuals diagnosed with gender dysphoria — or even showing symptoms — are considered medically unfit for service due to the condition’s “mental, surgical, and physical constraints,” which it claims are incompatible with the demands of military duty.

The ban's rollout has been chaotic, prompting widespread confusion across the armed forces. Legal experts, unit commanders, and soldiers alike have reported inconsistent guidance and unclear timelines, leaving many trans service members in limbo.

Maj. Vandal, who has never sought medical or surgical treatment for gender transition while serving, worries that the policy disregards the years of experience, dedication, and talent that trans troops contribute.

“I’ve given my adult life to this country,” she said. “Now I’m being told I’m no longer fit to wear the uniform — not because of my performance, but because of who I am.”

Advocates and civil rights groups have called the policy discriminatory and harmful, warning that it could drive out capable personnel during a time of critical need. Meanwhile, service members like Vandal are left navigating uncertainty, hoping the military will recognize their right to serve with dignity.
