The Air Force has designated Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado Springs as the permanent residence of Space Force Delta 15, a unit responsible for safeguarding U.S. operations in space. The decision emphasizes Colorado's extensive ecosystem of military and intelligence assets and its pivotal role in national space defense.
Once fully staffed, Delta 15, established in 2023, will accommodate 250 guardians, a significant increase from its initial 30-40 personnel. The National Space Defense Center's backbone is the unit, which collaborates closely with the National Reconnaissance Office to protect satellites and guarantee mission continuity under the leadership of Col. Stephen Lyon.
Delta 15 also collaborates with Space Forces-Space (S4S) at California's Vandenberg Base to support global space operations under Space Command. The National Space Defense Center addresses the increasing challenges posed by adversaries such as China by integrating intelligence, reconnaissance, and operational data to provide real-time domain awareness.
Colorado's strategic infrastructure and vibrant space industry were mentioned by local and federal legislators, such as Sen. John Hickenlooper and Gov. Jared Polis, in their endorsement of the decision. Hickenlooper underscored the significance of Delta 15's mission, asserting that Colorado is the focal point of our national security operations in space.
Although the establishment of Space Delta 15 fortifies Colorado's position, the future of Space Command remains a topic of debate, with Alabama contending to relocate the larger 1,700-employee unit. Nevertheless, Schriever was the undisputed choice for Delta 15 following the Air Force's exhaustive site suitability assessment.
Delta 15 is prepared to advance U.S. space operations by ensuring that intelligence, cyber, and reconnaissance capabilities are integrated and prepared to address evolving threats now that its permanent home has been secured.
