On the eve of Black History Month, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) released a directive prohibiting official celebrations of all cultural awareness and heritage months, encompassing Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and Pride Month.

The guidance issued on January 31 by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, titled “Identity Months Dead at DoD,” asserts that these observances detract from unity and military readiness. “Attempts to split the team—favoring one group over another—undermine unity and jeopardize the success of the mission,” the directive states.

According to the new policy, official resources, including work hours, are not permitted for use in cultural events. Military personnel may participate in such events on an unofficial basis during their off-duty hours. The status of scheduled Black History Month events and designated resources is currently uncertain.

The announcement is in line with wider initiatives aimed at dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs within the military. The directive comes in response to an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, which directs federal agencies to dismantle offices and initiatives related to DEI.

Furthermore, the Defense Intelligence Agency has recently put a hold on “special observances” like Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and Juneteenth, while federal holidays continue to be unaffected.

Interestingly, the Pentagon’s decision coincided with a White House statement acknowledging Black History Month. President Trump’s proclamation urged educators and public officials to commemorate the month with “appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.”

The Department of Defense's ban has ignited a discussion, with detractors contending that cultural observances encourage inclusion, whereas proponents assert they lead to division.
