President Donald Trump said Friday that Boeing has won the contract to produce the Air Force's Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter jet, the F-47. This sixth-generation aircraft, which is set to replace the F-22 Raptor, is hailed as a dramatic leap forward in air combat technology.
During an Oval Office announcement with defense officials, Trump praised the F-47's "state-of-the-art stealth technologies," which make it "virtually unseeable," and its ability to operate with autonomous drone wingmen, also known as collaborative combat aircraft. He described the F-47 as "something the likes of which nobody has ever seen before," emphasizing its superior speed, maneuverability, and payload capability.
The F-47, which was developed in secret, is intended to ensure US air superiority in the face of escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly those with China.
Trump declared, "America's enemies will never see it coming." Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin shared this attitude, claiming that the F-47 will be "the most advanced, lethal, and adaptable fighter ever developed."
The NGAD program, in which Boeing and Lockheed Martin competed for the contract, marks a huge investment in future air domination, with the F-47 set to alter aerial warfare.
