Starting January 1, 2025, soldiers and their families dealing with family emergencies will benefit from enhanced financial support through a new policy from Army Emergency Relief (AER). The nonprofit organization that offers financial aid to soldiers will now provide up to $2,000 for domestic travel and up to $4,000 for international travel in emergencies such as the passing of a loved one, critical surgeries, or disaster assistance.
In cases where travel expenses surpass these thresholds, AER will offer further assistance through zero-interest loans. This update signifies a change from the earlier policy, which divided support into a grant and a no-interest loan. Based on their financial situations soldiers may now be eligible for full grants.
“Service members should not have to stress over the cost of a plane ticket when they need to be with their families,” stated Michael Grinston, CEO of AER and former Sergeant Major of the Army.
In 2024, more than 4,300 soldiers accessed $4.6 million in emergency travel funds, primarily benefiting enlisted soldiers ranging from private first class to sergeant first class, with annual earnings between $28,500 and $58,600.
Emergency travel assistance is part of AER’s wider “Care During a Crisis” initiative, encompassing support for disaster relief, funeral expenses, and aid for victims of domestic violence. AER provides support to soldiers by covering expenses such as rent, childcare, relocation costs, military spouse relicensing fees, and uncovered medical expenses.
“This change ensures that soldiers and their families can respond to emergencies without financial strain,” stated AER spokesperson Sean Ryan.
AER seeks to enhance support for soldiers, helping to alleviate their challenges and enabling them to concentrate on what is truly important during tough times.
