Army officials said Sunday that a trainee in the U.S. Army's Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment died last week while in basic battle training at Fort Jackson.

They found the man dead while he was training on Thursday, April 24. The Army has not released the person's name to the public because policy says that the next of kin must be notified before the name is released. It's still not clear if the death is being looked into.

Major General Daryl O. Hood, who is in charge of Fort Jackson, said in a statement, "Losing a teammate affects all of us." "Their family, the cadre, and their fellow trainees are in our thoughts and prayers."

Fort Jackson, in Columbia, South Carolina, is one of the main places where the U.S. Army does basic training. Every year, tens of thousands of trainees graduate from the base. After the death, the base went into a 48-hour training stand down to look at the situation and help staff and students.

This is the second death of a soldier at Fort Jackson in a year while in basic training. Another trainee from the 3rd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment, passed out early in training in the spring of 2023 and later died at a hospital.
