The U.S. Army is moving forward with plans to establish a new Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) for robotics and autonomous systems technicians, initially focused on Army special operations. According to Lt. Col. Allie Scott, director of public affairs for U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC), the Robotics and Autonomous Systems MOS is currently in development and awaiting approval. If approved, this specialty will be available to all Army personnel and eventually open to new recruits, providing a dedicated career path for expertise in robotics.

Maj. Gen. Jason Slider, commander of the Army’s special warfare school, emphasized the need for warrant officers who can plan, manage, and deploy robotic and autonomous platforms in coordination with broader operations. These specialists, known as 390A Robotics Technicians, will be instrumental in integrating autonomous technologies on the front lines.

The U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, tasked with training these new warrant officers, is also exploring advanced levels for the 390A specialty, which would include higher-ranking warrant officers to advise commanders on strategic deployment of autonomous systems. Approval from Army headquarters and Human Resources Command will determine the timeline for implementing this pioneering MOS.
