Las Vegas police have disclosed that Matthew Livelsberger, the Army Green Beret who detonated a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel on New Year’s Day, utilized generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, to assist in planning the attack. Livelsberger allegedly sought information regarding explosive targets, ammunition velocity, and the legal status of fireworks. Although the explosion resulted in minor injuries to seven individuals, the hotel sustained no substantial damage, and officials verified that he acted independently.

“This marks the initial occurrence on U.S. soil where ChatGPT was employed to create a device,” stated Kevin McMahill, sheriff of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, describing it as a “game-changer” for law enforcement. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, announced that its tools are intended to refuse harmful inquiries and highlighted its collaboration with authorities.

Livelsberger’s writings outlined plans to execute a similar attack at Arizona’s Grand Canyon Skywalk yet did not provide any rationale for the shift in location. The journal expressed worries about being categorized as a terrorist and emphasized his intention to prevent causing harm to others.

The explosion, believed by officials to have been caused by a mix of racing-grade fuel, pyrotechnic materials, and birdshot, occurred after Livelsberger’s self-inflicted gunshot. Notes left by the soldier characterized the event as a “wake-up call” for societal issues and conveyed support for President-elect Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Livelsberger’s writings addressed political grievances, global conflicts such as the war in Ukraine, and personal challenges related to his military service. Investigators are actively examining further evidence, which encompasses classified material, a laptop, and surveillance logs.
