U.S. Rep. Mike Waltz, an Army National Guard veteran and experienced lawmaker, has been chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as his national security adviser, according to sources. Waltz's appointment positions him at the center of critical global security challenges, such as the U.S. military's support for Ukraine, concerns regarding Russia-North Korea relations, Middle Eastern conflicts involving Iranian proxies, and efforts to mediate between Israel and Hezbollah.

In addition to advocating for a robust U.S. defense policy, Waltz, who represents east-central Florida, has been a steadfast supporter of Donald Trump. He was the first Green Beret to be elected to Congress and recently secured re-election for a third term. This is particularly noteworthy. He has extensive legislative experience, having served as the chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and as a member of the House Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Committees.

Waltz has been a vocal opponent of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. He has advocated for the protection of Americans who remain in the country and for accountability for the 13 service members who perished in the Kabul airport bombing. His resolute posture on China has included calls to boycott the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in protest of human rights abuses and the origins of COVID-19.

Advisory duties at the Pentagon, combat tours in Afghanistan, and active-duty service as a Green Beret comprise Waltz's military career. His readiness to pivot military priorities "away from woke policies" and towards combat readiness is reminiscent of Trump's rhetoric.

Although there are members of Congress who are apprehensive about the potential for Republican seats to be reduced as a result of resignations, Trump's selection indicates a dedication to assertive national security leadership. An official announcement from Trump is anticipated shortly.
