Thanks to the commitment of a local soldier, a long-neglected Civil War-era cemetery in a small town has become a monument of respect and resiliency. Once overgrown and essentially abandoned, the property is now well-known for its historical value. Originally used as a resting place for Black troops and citizens denied burial in white cemeteries, the 1800s' constructed burial cemetery was

Floyd White, a retired military man with almost four decades of service, is leading the restoration. White has led initiatives to maintain the cemetery, register missing graves, and repair pilfers of stolen monuments through his foundation. Reflecting the dignity these men deserve, he guarantees the American flag above the spot is always perfect.

White declared during a recent ceremony, "This is sacred ground." "We have to honor their sacrifices and distribute their stories."

Eight Black Civil War veterans, Tuskegee Airmen, and other fighters for liberties they were often denied upon coming home are buried in the cemetery. From the Civil War to WWII, their contributions to America's wars reflect the battles against racism and inequality that continued long after they left duty.

Public ceremonies honoring these men are part of the revitalizing project. The community came together recently to consider the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, whose bravery during World War Two altered the story of Black military service.

"This is about realizing their humanity and contributions; it's more than just history," White added.

The project reminds us of the sacrifices Black troops made and the continuous struggle for equality as scheduled events for next year abound. White's commitment guarantees that their remembrance would motivate next generations.
