Tuesday's Navy Distinguished Public Service Award went to Tom Cruise, the highest distinction the Navy can bestow upon a civilian. During a ceremony close to London, Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro presented the honor in recognition of Cruise's public service and his part in advancing the Navy via the venerable "Top Gun" series.

"It is my honor to present Mr. Tom Cruise the Distinguished Public Service award for his ongoing support of our Navy & Marine Corps team," Del Toro posted on X (previously Twitter). "Your efforts have motivated generations to seek professions of service to our nation!”

Military recruitment and public view of the Navy have been much changed by Cruise's portrayal of fearless Navy pilots in the original 1986 Top Gun and the 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Former Navy Cmdr. Guy Snodgrass, a pilot and instructor at the Fighter Weapons School, praised Cruise for igniting enthusiasm in military aviation. He said the movies had "boosted recruiting" and motivated many people to service.

With Top Gun acting as a cultural touchstone combining entertainment with a strong message about devotion and dedication, the award honors the ongoing link between Hollywood and the military.

Cruise's appreciation close to London not only honors his film heritage but also his part in inspiring the Navy's present and future ranks, pride, and possibilities.
