The 121st Fighter Squadron, which was formerly assigned to the District of Columbia Air National Guard, will shortly join Maryland's National Guard as part of the Air Force's strategic reorganization. Governor Wes Moore and Maryland authorities acknowledged the transfer on Monday, emphasizing the state's efforts to maintain its flying role amidst shifting military priorities.

Operating from Joint Base Andrews in Prince George's County, the squadron's move assures Maryland's aviation presence as the Air Force plans to phase out the A-10 "Warthog" attack aircraft at Martin State Airport by September 2025. Brig. Gen. Drew E. Dougherty of the Maryland Air National Guard underlined that the move will protect experienced personnel while placing Maryland as a leader in cybersecurity operations.

The action brings to a close a number of Maryland's federal budget priorities, including full funding for the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and efforts to keep the Commanders' stadium in Landover open. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen praised the transfer as a "win-win scenario" for maintaining stability at Joint Base Andrews while also addressing pilot shortages in the National Capital Region.

Moore said the deal is a testimony to Maryland's national security efforts, ensuring both the state's legacy of military service and its changing cybersecurity mission remain strong. However, details on the squadron's timeframe and operational modifications are still unknown.
