Capt. James Spitler and Master Chief Petty Officer Michael Dioquino have been temporarily relieved from their posts as commander and senior enlisted leader of Coast Guard Sector San Diego, according to an announcement made by the United States Coast Guard on October 25, 2024. According to a statement released by the military, this decision was made after an inquiry that led to a loss of confidence in both of the commanders.
The statement was delivered by Rear Admiral Joseph Buzzella, who is the head of the seventeenth District of the Coast Guard. There were charges that both Spitler and Dioquino had unfairly treated their subordinates, and the investigation centered on those allegations. Because these commanders have been relieved, the Coast Guard has demonstrated its dedication to preserving an atmosphere that is both polite and successful in command.
During his time in the Coast Guard, Captain Spitler had previously served in a variety of capacities, including leadership duties during key operations. The month of July 2022 marked the beginning of his service at Sector San Diego, where he was tasked with the responsibility of supervising several operations that were crucial to the maritime safety and security of the region.
During the time that a comprehensive review is being carried out, the Coast Guard will appoint interim leadership to guarantee responsibility and maintain its standards of conduct within the organizational ranks.
