Five Democratic politicians from Connecticut, including Sen. Chris Murphy and Reps. Jim Himes, Joe Courtney, John Larson, and Jahana Hayes, received bomb threats at their residences Thursday. Law enforcement, including local and Capitol Police, arrived quickly and discovered no indication of explosives.
Representative Hayes stated that a pipe bomb threat was submitted to Wolcott Police, sparking an inquiry. Similarly, threats to Murphy's Hartford house, Courtney's Vernon home, and Larson's East Hartford property prompted police intervention. Himes learned of the threat during Thanksgiving and praised law police for their quick response.
The FBI acknowledged that it is investigating the threats alongside state and local partners. The occurrences occur amid rising political tensions and after a slew of threats and attacks, including "swatting" efforts against famous public figures and incoming Trump government nominees.
Lawmakers denounced the threats as a frightening increase in political violence. Rep. Himes called for peace and civility over the holiday season, underlining that violence has no place in American democracy.
These threats underline the increased risks that public leaders confront, as well as the urgent need for enhanced security measures in an increasingly politicized climate.
