Lee Cuellar, an Army veteran, was convicted of first-degree murder for the 2021 strangulation of his wife on Thursday morning. The jury deliberated for less than three hours. The 2nd Judicial District Court's Judge Britt Baca presided over an intense eight-day trial that culminated in the verdict.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Cuellar had a history of domestic violence and manipulation, which resulted in a pattern of abusive behavior that ultimately led to his wife's tragic death. A disturbing account of their tumultuous relationship was disclosed through testimonies from family members and friends, who noted that Cuellar's controlling behavior had raised red flags prior to the fatal incident.

The prosecution contended that Cuellar intentionally terminated his wife's life during a violent altercation, claiming that he strangled her in a fit of fury. The defense, on the other hand, maintained that the couple had been in dispute; however, they maintained that the death was not premeditated homicide.

Jurors ultimately concurred with the prosecution, finding Cuellar guilty of first-degree murder after a brief deliberation. The sentence is mandatory, ranging from 30 years to life in prison, for the conviction. The victim's family members expressed relief at the verdict, asserting that justice had been served for their loved one.

The case underscores the ongoing concerns regarding domestic violence and the necessity of increased community awareness and prevention initiatives as the legal proceedings conclude. Next month, Cuellar is scheduled to be sentenced.
