80th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge: Honoring Sacrifice and Service

Monday, December 16, commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, a critical World War II battle in the bottomless Ardennes Forest that tested Allied forces' fortitude and courage during one of the war's most brutal winters. Commemorations took place throughout Belgium and Luxembourg, bringing together active-duty troops, veterans, reenactors, and dignitaries to honor those who fought and died in this vital campaign.

In December 1944, Nazi Germany launched a surprise counteroffensive against Allied forces in the Ardennes, hoping to break through and reclaim crucial territory. Undersupplied and facing harsh winter circumstances, American troops engaged in weeks of hard fighting. The combat resulted in devastating fatalities, with 19,000 American soldiers killed, 47,000 wounded, and 23,000 missing or taken, making it the worst US engagement in Europe during WWII.

On December 13, Brig. Gen. Matt Jones, Deputy Director for Operations at the Pentagon, commented on the significance of the war during a ceremony at the battle of the Bulge Memorial in Bastogne.

"Few battles in American history reflect that service and sacrifice more than the Battle of the Bulge."

Commemorations Throughout Europe

Over the weekend, reenactors clad in authentic WWII winter uniforms marched through the Ardennes Forest, simulating maneuvers and paying tribute to the soldiers who braved the harsh cold to hold the line against continuous German attacks. In Belgium and Luxembourg, American cemeteries and memorials featured solemn ceremonies in honor of the fallen, attended by heads of state, ambassadors, and surviving veterans.

The festivities are part of a series of significant commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of World War II operations. Earlier this year, troops, veterans, and reenactors commemorated the anniversary of D-Day in Normandy and Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands.
